M100 - Jenny Lind Lock, Plate & Key - SOLD 01/2022

An early antique trunk lock of the style used mostly on higher quality Jenny Lind trunks and stagecoach trunks of the 1840's to 1860's. The complete lock with the iron lock and upper latch piece, the brass lock plate and original heart shaped barrel key. The brass lock plate has an interesting spring loaded keyhole cover. It moves to the left when you push up on it and then locks back in place to cover the keyhole. In very good used condition with minor signs of use. This style locking mechanism was originally patented back in Dec. 1838 by Henry Jones of New Jersey. I have a copy of the patent document and these were used on trunks earlier than most people think.

The base iron lock measures 3" wide by 2 1/4" tall and the top arrow piece is 2 3/4" tall by 5/8" wide. This lock requires a cutout in the trunk, about 2 1/4" high by 2" wide for the base. The brass face plate is 3 1/4" wide and 2 7/8" wide. The keyhole matches the shape of the large barrel key. See pictures for details of the shape and condition. A great lock for early antique trunks. Put on with trunk nails. If you have questions about how just check with me. Very hard to find especially with the original key! Rare style you won't see for sale very often. An authentic lock will increase the value of your antique trunk and improve the look.
