M106 - Rare Brass Shield Lock Cover

$58.00

A very rare and beautiful trunk lock plate handmade of solid brass. It is marked "H.C. Jones Newark N.J., Patent". Measures 3 5/8" tall and 3" wide.

This has an intricate and well-made keyhole cover with a secret opening feature. This style lock cover was used with locks of the mid-1800's such as early Jenny Lind trunks. A few had special handmade lock plates with secret opening methods. This would keep people from easily getting into the lock to try to unlock it. If you don't know how this opens it can be very difficult and frustrating to do. It even took me a good while to figure it out after I purchased this lock plate several years ago. As you can see in the pictures, the keyhole cover is hinged and has a strong securing piece on the inside which locks into place when close. It even has a built in brass spring and sliding piece. I will provide the details of how to open this to the buyer. Please see all the pictures for details of the condition and style. It's made of heavy gauge brass, very strong and solid and with a nice age patina.

Henry C. Jones was a lock maker in Newark, New Jersey from the 1830's to 1860's. He invented and patented the lock style used on many mid 1800's trunks. The patent was issued in 1838 and was one of the first American lock patents. It's the lock with the top latching piece that looks like an arrow and fits down into the main lock piece. The lock plate design was also patented which is why it's marked Patent. I don't know the exact year of the patent yet, but if I find it I will include that also. It could also be as early as the 1830's as these were used with that type lock. I do have the 1838 lock patent document which I will provide.
