T104 - 1870's Round Top Victorian Half Trunk

$625.00

Size: 22" wide, 19" tall, 17 1/2" deep

A very nice early American "half trunk", these were originally named Hat Trunks in the old trunk catalogs I've found. Made of dark pine and hardwood slats, the wood has beautiful grain and color and is finished with a satin tung oil finish which is waterproof and durable. The slat clamps have a satin pewter/nickel finish which is very attractive and close to the original look (lots of other folks paint these gold or brass but very few trunks before 1900 had brass or brass plated clamps). All the parts are original and in excellent condition and it even has a working brass lock and key! The lock is dated, patented in 1869, by a lock maker in Philadelphia. The bottom is very solid wood and clean with four slats. New leather handles have been installed just like the originals with the old fancy cast iron holders. The interior is relined with fabric, but saving all the original colorful Victorian paper trim! A wonderful little picture showing two girls dancing while a man plays violin, with a dog jumping is in the lid, also original. A cedar plank tray has been made as the original was missing, and this gives the trunk a nice scent inside. Like most early trunks, this had a few minor cracks, dents, and signs of use, but any cracks are filled and glued, so the trunk is very strong and sturdy. These cube-size trunks are much harder to find than the ordinary sizes as fewer were made. In Victorian times, stylish ladies would need to take several large hats along on their trips for those social events. This would be great for storing all sorts of treasures and be a wonderful decorator piece at the same time!
