T126 - Leather Covered Document Box 1850's - SOLD 07/2022

$165.00

Size: 10" wide, 5" tall, 6 1/4" deep.

A beautiful and rare small document box (sometimes called bank boxes back in that time) from the early to mid 1800's. This one is in excellent complete condition! It has been recovered with brown russet leather and leather trim with lots of original handmade brass tacks. It has a leather handle on top put on just as the original. It is lined in an early American pattern fabric. The bottom is covered with felt fabric. The iron and brass lock is complete with the working barrel key and is marked "J Terry & Co" (with an eagle holding a key) on the brass keyhole cover. James Terry was a lock maker in Connecticut in the 1840's to mid 1850's. He joined another lock maker to form Eagle Lock Company in 1853. You don't see the J Terry locks very often. So this box and lock were made prior to that. The box is very strong, made of thick wood, covered with the leather, brass trim and tacks. Great for holding jewelry, cards, cd's, papers, etc. or just to display with your collection! A real collectible item with a great original look and very hard to find in such a small size.
