T125 - 1880's Half or Hat Trunk - SOLD 02/2020

$495.00

Size: approx. 23" wide, 18" tall, 17" deep.

This old trunk is a beautiful example of the smaller half size bonnet or hat trunks of the 1880's to 1890's. (Sometimes called half trunks today) These small cube shaped trunks were typically made to carry ladies bonnets or men's top hats, gloves, scarves, and other small items. Wealthier folks at the time would usually travel with several trunks, not just one. This size continued to be made into the early 1900's by many trunk makers including Louis Vuitton. I don't get this rare type very often and this one has the working brass lock and original key (see pictures). The lock has the patent date of 1875 and the front latches were patented in 1882. The side handles have been replaced with original style stitched leather and the old cast iron holders. The front latches and all hardware is original. The wood is solid and hand finished with tung oil finish for a beautiful satin finish. The trunk is in wonderful condition, very strong with thick wood! The bottom is clean, with metal covering and wood slats and has glides to protect floors. The interior was carefully cleaned and preserved, with the fancy paper trim, Victorian lithographed print and replaced lift out wood tray. There is a label in the lid from the maker, H. Bender & Son of Easton, PA, manufacturer of Trunks, Valices, Satchels, and Traveling Bags! A beautiful and rare small trunk from this period, a true collectors piece!
