T110 - Civil War Period Hand Trunk - SOLD 07/2019

$495.00

Size: approx. 15" wide, 16" tall, 15" deep.

This old trunk is a beautiful example of the small hand trunks, bonnet or hat trunks of the 1850's to about 1870. (Sometimes called half trunks) These small cube shaped trunks were typically made to carry ladies bonnets or men's top hats, gloves, scarves, and other small items. Wealthier folks at the time would usually travel with several trunks, not just one. This size continued to be made into the early 1900's by many trunk makers including Louis Vuitton. I don't get this rare type very often and this one has the working lock and fancy heart shaped barrel key (see pictures). The large brass head nails, brass lock plate, iron banding, and small iron hinges are all original. The lock cover on this trunk is an ornate style. The iron barrel key has a nice heart shaped bow. The top handle is original and has been treated with leather preservative. The front leather tie-down straps have been remade exactly like the originals using the old metal buckles. The wood is solid and hand finished with tung oil finish for a beautiful satin finish. The trunk is in wonderful condition! The interior was carefully cleaned and preserved, with the fancy paper trim and original lift out wood and cloth laced tray. There is the small label in the lid from the maker, Carson A. Cox of Philadelphia, manufacturer of Trunks and Carpet Bags! A beautiful and rare small trunk from this period, a true collector's piece!
