T111 - Early French Hand Trunk

$225.00

Size: 17" wide, 12" tall, 11" front to back.

A small rounded top French hand trunk with original gray canvas covering and brass top handle. The trunk was likely made from the 1870's to 1890's based on the style, brass trim and locks.. The inner label is from Aux Etats-Unis of Paris, with "Articles De Voyage" and there is a beautiful chromolithograph of a young girl smelling the roses. The trunk has rounded edges on top, metal edge bands with small brass tacks, and a solid brass original top handle. The gray enameled canvas is in very good condition and there are decorative large brass head tacks on the front and back, and on the bottom as feet. (This was usually done on American made carpet bags and small trunks of the 1860's to 1870's). There are two small locks and a working barrel key. (one lock is a little sticky) The shape is interesting because the top is a little wider than the bottom, rarely seen. The interior was cleaned and refinished and the old label and picture were preserved. This small trunk was probably used for small personal items and important papers. The interior has a small compartment on one side, which has a built in secret compartment. The compartment is revealed by pulling out the sliding divider (shown in the pictures). It looks like it's nailed in but has fake nails at the bottom. Quite a unique and rare little antique trunk!
