T115 - 1870's Tooled Leather Trunk - SOLD 04/2018
$645.00
Size: approximately 30" wide, 18" tall, 15" front to back.
A beautiful leather covered trunk made during the late 1870's by the John Goman trunk company of New York City. The original cowhide leather covering is beautifully tooled with ornate designs, especially on top and the front. You can see some of the detail in the pictures provided. The leather has been treated with professional grade leather preservative. It's in very nice condition with only a few small spots of damage, which have been glued, on the back and sides. According to old trunk catalogs I own, the leather trunks were more expensive models and were high quality. These are very hard to find in this smaller size, especially in such original condition! This is a well made trunk with thick wood, iron clamps, strong hardwood slats, and brass trim. The solid brass lock is marked with a Star and Key emblem and "Phila", for the Star Lock Works of Philadelphia. It also has the patent dates of 1869 and 1877 and it works well with the original key! The trunk also has working iron latches on the front, a style patented in 1873. All of the trunk hardware and hinges are original and still very strong. The shape of the trunk is also unusual, with an arched front and rounded top, and with a wood slat on the lid front and rear. Not very many trunks are found with this shape. The interior is complete with the lift out tray and the fold down upper compartment which also has a lid. The interior still has the fabulous Victorian trim and chromolithograph (printed color picture) in excellent condition. The bottom and top of the trunk have been relined with nice coordinating fabric. See pictures for the details. The leather handles and lid lifter have been replaced in the original style. The bottom is very solid and clean, with two hardwood slats and the iron corner rollers. A fabulous piece of American history and true collector's item!
