T109 - Mini or Toy Jenny Lind 1864 Trunk w/Key! - SOLD 01/2020

Size: 12" Wide, 8" Tall, 8" front to back.

A miniature Jenny Lind toy / sample / doll trunk of the 1860's. These are extremely hard to find, especially so small and complete! It has an elegant curved shape which is not often found on these small trunks. This one has all the original printed paper covering, four metal bands and the original lock with key. The lock even has the brass keyhole cover and latch and works well. On the front center of the lid the paper is printed with "Patented Nov. 8th 1864" which is still in very good condition. The leather handles have been replaced as they would have been. There are small brass hinges which are replacements for the old damaged hinges. The interior of the trunk has the old paper lining, original tray, and a small picture of General Meade. The may have been made during or shortly after the Civil War. Perfect for display with your fashion dolls or miniature trunk collection, as a special jewelry box, or as a great conversation display piece! A true piece of American history related to the Civil War and Swedish singer Jenny Lind. These special little trunks were quite well made and used by children and ladies, but were not something everyone could afford. The trunk is made of wood and the bottom is in excellent condition with two wide slat runners. The interior does have some missing and stained paper lining and a piece out of the corner of the lid compartment cover. A small piece of the tray side has been repaired. The trunk has a small area which has been repaired, on the front left side at the opening edge. I believe the repairs were where a mouse may have chewed on some of the wood. The overall condition is still very good and the trunk displays very well. See the pictures for the condition details. For many years I have specialized in the early American made trunks including the famous Jenny Lind style which originated in the United States.

Many people also call the small trunks such as this a "salesman's sample" but there is little evidence that these were used that way. In fact, some early trunk catalogs also show "toy trunks" for children and there was very limited need for small trunks such as this as samples since people could often see the full size models. Later when traveling salesmen were hauling samples of all types around the country, they would have had their own full size "sample trunk" as well as printed catalogs to show the buyers the various models.

You can also put this or other trunks on a layaway plan with a $100 deposit by personal check or paypal. Please email me at Marvin@ThisOldTrunk.com if you have any questions
