T113 - Taylor Rare Salesman Sample Trunk - SOLD 11/2016

Size: 29" wide, 22" tall, 17 1/2" deep.

C.A. Taylor Trunk Works of Chicago made very high quality, heavy duty trunks for traveling salesmen, theatrical groups, circus groups, musicians, etc. This one is a rare size "Sample Trunk" which is totally complete and in great restored condition. The brass label on top is marked with the company name and "XX Sample Trunk", which was their highest grade of trunks. Built for hard use and frequent traveling. This has all the original special features including the divided interior tray with lid, special latches and hinges; an extra strong lock with working key, and ornate cast iron hardware all over! Charles Taylor had several patents issued for his hardware and trunk styles, and some were made available to many American trunk makers. The original 6 layer leather handles are held with extra large 1883 patented handle holders which have a large T on them. The trunk was carefully cleaned and repainted and the thick wood slats were refinished. The interior was cleaned and relined with original style fabric, while preserving all the colorful trim and the large interior label which lists the styles of trunks Taylor made. The trunk has some dents and dings from use but is a wonderful example of the sample trunks used from the 1880's to early 1900's. In over 40 years of trunk restoration I have never seen another Taylor Sample Trunk of this size. A wonderful trunk which can be used in many ways and will hold your special family treasures!

Note: The term "salesman's sample" trunk is being used a lot online, especially by people selling small antique doll or toy trunks. I see it misused very often. Nearly all of the small trunks seen for sale today are really doll trunks or toy trunks (per the historical documents and antique trunk catalogs). Some of them were quite well made and very detailed, but they were still made as children's toys, not samples. There were a few true salesman's sample trunks but they were small trunks made with special patented hardware or coverings used on regular trunks. Very few of these are found because they were not really used or needed by most trunk makers because their salesmen provided catalogs and showed examples of their full size trunks to customers. The salesman's "sample trunk" such as this one, was a great example for the salesman to show the details and hardware of their company. The salesman would also have a variety of their trunks shipped to the locations where they traveled and sold them at a discount in order to get new orders. I'm not making this information up, it was actually obtained from articles in early Trunk and Leather Goods Journals. Also a complete copy of a 1908 Taylor Trunk Works catalog is available for purchase on our Research Page.

Price: $975 plus $60 shipping by FedEx Ground in the United States. Thanks for visiting ThisOldTrunk!
