T118 - Ornate 1880's Ladies Saratoga Trunk - SOLD 08/2016

Size: 32" wide, 27" tall, 20" front to back

A high quality barrel top Saratoga trunk from about 1885 in excellent restored condition! This was possibly a "Bride Trunk" model which was a top of the line ladies trunk designed for the fashionable bride of the 1880's. A beautiful trunk with thick wood and ornate cast hardware, designed by Moses Cherry of New York. Moses Cherry was a prominent trunk maker in New York City with his store on Broadway from about 1870 to the early 1900's when his son Moses Cherry Jr. took over the business. (His son had two trunk patents, in 1913 and 1915). This trunk has all the special features of the high quality trunks including ornate cast hardware, fancy tack designs, extra wood slats, fancy iron bottom rollers, a large lid compartment and small glove / fan compartment. and lift out tray. (The tray is a solid pine replacement.) This trunk is one of the very few I've seen with special scalloped edge metal on all sides (see detailed pictures). Cherry produced some very high quality trunks with elaborate interiors and this is a wonderful example. See the original beautiful chromolithographs (printed color pictures) and trim inside the trunk and their special label. The high round top trunks were often called Saratoga trunks by the trunk makers, first named after Saratoga Springs, NY where ladies would take large trunks for extended vacations. The interior was completely cleaned and refinished also, except for the area with original paper trim and large picture. It has a working Star lock with original key, two front cast iron latches, bottom corner rollers, strong metal slat clamps and hinges. The trunk was hand finished with high quality satin tung oil finish which will protect it for many years to come. A great collector's and decorator's item that will certainly be a conversation piece. It's very strong and a large size which is very impressive and great for storing many treasures! Original style stitched leather handles have been installed with the original fancy iron holders. The lid has a high rounded shape with five outer hardwood slats and ornate slat clamps. The bottom is in excellent condition and has been cleaned and refinished also. No hardware has been changed or replaced on this trunk! The interior bottom was completely cleaned out and refinished, excellent for storage of clothes, blankets, etc. These trunks are rare in such excellent and complete condition. A desirable 32" size, not too huge! Please see the details in the pictures and email if you have any questions about any of my trunks. I have spent many years doing research on trunk history, hardware, and patents so that you can get the correct historical information about the trunks I restore. I see lots of incorrect information being given out on antique trunks, especially on some online auction websites and even on wikipedia. I also have copies of several rare antique trunk catalogs available on the Research page. This is a very rare style trunk and the first of it's type that I have ever had to sell.
