T102 - Martin Maier 1880's Slat Trunk - SOLD 10/2019

Size: 30" wide, 22" tall, 20" front to back.

Museum quality and condition! You just don't find these any nicer than this and I rarely have this type trunk to sell. A beautiful slat covered trunk made by Martin Maier & Company of Detroit, Michigan from the 1885 to 1895 period. A scarce trunk, with the flat top and beveled corners, and alternating light and dark wood slats. The wood slats on this trunk are made of two different types of wood, probably elm and walnut, and have beautiful grain (see detailed pictures). Very few flat top Martin Maier slat trunks are found and this one is in excellent condition. The finish and black paint on the trunk is original, which is amazing to find! All of the nails and some hardware pieces on this trunk were originally tinned which gave them their silver color, some have the original tin and some were touched up to match. This style was advertised in a Maier catalog as a "rustic trunk covered entirely with hardwood slats". It is of superior quality and based on the Excelsior trunk patent of 1868, which most people now call "Oak Slat Trunks". Maier established his trunk company in 1865 after serving in the Civil War and later obtained the sole rights to manufacture slat trunks in the mid-west area. This special trunk is not common in any way! Martin Maier & Co developed their distinctive narrow slat style trunk sometime in the 1870's and examples are very hard to find. These are made of hardwood strips over an all wood body. These trunks were made to be impressive and were more expensive to make than the ordinary metal, leather, or canvas covered trunks. That's probably why they are so rare today. The hardware styles on this trunk date it to approximately 1885 to about 1895. The special corner "lid stay" hinges are marked Pat'd April 1879 and were patented by Martin Maier. The front catches were patented in 1882 by a large trunk parts maker. All of the hardware is in great condition and the wood has no breaks or missing wood. No sand blasting or polyurethane coating has been done on this trunk as some other restorers often do. The interior is truly beautiful with a nice Victorian style chromolithograph, a die-cut and colorful trim, and the blue Maier label. A deep two section lift out tray is completely original with the covers and leather tabs. The inside bottom section has the original brown fabric lining. The trunk bottom has original wood slats with iron rollers and metal covering which is very clean. Original style triple layer stitched leather handles have been replaced, using the original iron holders with star designs. The original lock has a working key! A great size that can be used in many was, such as a wonderful side table or coffee table! I see Louis Vuitton trunks for sale every day for much higher prices, but rarely see a trunk of this beautiful style. A very functional and collectible American made antique trunk that is quite unique. The buyer will also receive copies of the original hardware and slat trunk patents. This trunk is very well made and strong. Pick up or delivery arrangements may also be made, so please check with us if you have any questions. This trunk has been part of my own collection for a few years and I am only selling it to help pay for some home renovations. It's time for someone else to enjoy this 120 year old beauty.
