T121 - Martin Maier Saratoga Bride Trunk! - SOLD 11/2015

Size: 34" wide, 32" tall, 22" deep front to back

An amazing large barrel top Saratoga style trunk from the 1890's in excellent restored condition! This was a "Bride Trunk" which was a top of the line large ladies trunk designed for the fashionable bride of the 1890's. A great looking trunk with beautiful thick wood and ornate cast hardware designed by Martin Maier of Detroit Michigan. If you look closely at the hardware pieces you will see that some of them have a unique design with a diamond shape and there is an "M" in the design also. Very few trunks are found with this special hardware. Martin Maier produced some very high quality trunks with elaborate interiors and this is a wonderful example. They included some beautiful chromolithographs (printed color pictures) inside the trunk and their special label. This trunk was purchased up in the Detroit area where it was originally made. The high round top trunks were often called Saratoga trunks by the trunk makers, first named after Saratoga Springs, NY where ladies would take large trunks for extended vacations. Note the complete original ornate interior with a deep lift out tray, upper lid compartment, and covered glove box! Great original tray covers, with the original letters pocket envelope and fancy Victorian paper trim. This trunk also has the second "skirt tray" under the larger top tray. It also has the patented hardware and hinged tray so that the tray can be lifted and held up in place without removing it (see pictures). Working solid brass Corbin lock with barrel key! Front cast metal latches, bottom corner rollers, strong metal slat clamps and hinges. A great collector's and decorator's item and will certainly be a conversation piece. It's very strong and a large size which is very impressive and great for storing many treasures! Thick custom made multi-layer leather handles have been replaced in the original style. This trunk was made in approximately 1890 as can be determined by the hardware styles and patents. The lid has a very high rounded shape with five outer hardwood slats with ornate slat clamps. The bottom is in excellent clean condition and has the original rollers. No hardware has been changed or replaced on this trunk. The interior bottom was completely cleaned out and refinished, excellent for storage of clothes, blankets, etc. These trunks are rare in such excellent and complete condition. Please see the details in the pictures and email or call if you have any questions about any of my trunks. I have spent many years doing research on trunk history, the hardware and patents so that you can get the correct historical information about the trunks I restore. I see lots of incorrect information being given out on antique trunks, especially on some online auction websites and even on wikipedia. I also have copies of several rare antique trunk catalogs available on the Research page. This is a very rare style trunk and the first Maier Bride trunk that I have ever had to sell.
