T108 - Excelsior Oak Slat Trunk, with Key! - SOLD 10/2019
$1,995.00
Size: 34" wide, 27" tall, 22" deep to edges.
This is a beautiful high quality Excelsior patent oak slat trunk which was designed in 1868. In excellent restored condition, complete with ornate solid brass lock with the barrel key, interior wooden tray, original bottom slats and corner rollers, working large front latches, and all original wood and hardware! This is a fine example of the Excelsior patent trunks and based on the hardware and style this one was made about 1878 to 1880. These unique trunks are made with solid oak slats attached to a thick pine body, which you can see in the pictures. This one has mahogany outer slats with all original large head brass nails, a special feature! This trunk is quite strong, heavy, and well made and has a nicely rounded barrel top with extra brass head nails on all sides. The wooden tray is a replacement made of solid wood, which makes the storage space much more usable. In their time these large round top trunks were called Barrel Top or Saratoga trunks. Many hours went into carefully cleaning, inside and out and finishing with the highest quality satin tung oil finish, to last another 130 years or more! The final finish was hand rubbed for a very smooth finish, which is also waterproof. I never coat trunks in polyurethane or spar varnish, which yellows with age. Custom made thick stitched leather handles were installed with the original style tooled leather holders. The bottom of the trunk is in excellent condition, also cleaned, repainted and finished. The interior also has beautiful wood which has a very smooth finish. The original linen lining and letter pocket was preserved in the lid, with the original colorful Victorian border trim and two wonderful die-cut chromolithographed pictures of children. The brass lock was polished and works well. Of course there are the expected minor signs of age and use on a trunk this age such as dents and some old battle scars. A copy of the 1868 patent office documents for the trunk will be included for the new owner! I've done extensive research on trunk history and the patents so that I can provide the true historical information on my trunks. A truly beautiful and impressive trunk which is a real conversation piece and collectible antique. The wood grain on the trunk is quite beautiful. This is a great size to use at the foot of a bed or in a large area. I've never had another one like this in nearly 40 years of trunk restoring. These trunks were much more expensive to make, were made in very limited quantities compared to other trunks, therefore they are much harder to find, especially in such great condition! If it weren't for the internet many people would never even see a trunk of this style. These oak slat trunks were designed to be the strongest trunks ever made and beautiful enough to be used as a piece of furniture. They are much rarer than the much more expensive Louis Vuitton trunks. A fabulous high quality trunk!
