T109 - Mini Jenny Lind Trunk with Key! - SOLD 08/2016

$445.00

Size: 10" Wide, 7 1/4" Tall, 7 1/2" front to back.

A truly miniature Jenny Lind doll trunk of the 1860's to 1870's. These are extremely hard to find, especially so small and complete! It has a very elegant shape which is not often found on the doll trunks. This one has all the original brass buttons with four metal bands and the original lock with key. The bottom of the lock is stamped "Patd Mar 69". The wood was carefully cleaned and finished with a fine wood preservative finish. The leather handles have been replaced and the small rosette holders are original. The interior of the trunk was cleaned out and someone has made a fabric tray and liner for the lid, with blue striped fabric. There are several old doll accessories that come with this including an ornately engraved silver plated mirror, a small necklace, two wood combs, a ladies fan, and a small round box. There are small loops on the lid liner which will hold the items and it can be removed. Perfect for display with your fashion dolls or miniature trunk collection, as a special jewelry box, or a great conversation display piece! A true piece of American history related to the Swedish singer Jenny Lind. These were made following her extremely popular U.S. tour in 1850 to 1852. Many items were named after her in the following years and she remained very popular until her death. These special little trunks were quite well made and used by children and ladies, but were not something everyone could afford. The trunk is made of beautiful pine and the bottom is in excellent condition too. For many years I have specialized in the early American made trunks including the famous Jenny Lind style which originated in the United States (not England as some other people have stated without any evidence)

Many people also call the small trunks such as this a "salesman's sample" but there is really no evidence that these were used that way. In fact, some early trunk catalogs also show "toy trunks" for children and there was really no need for a trunk such as this as a sample because they sold their trunks locally during this time period and did not need traveling salesmen. Later when traveling salesmen were hauling samples of all types around the country, they would have had their own full size "sample trunk" as well as printed catalogs to show the buyers the various models. A simply made miniature would not typically show anyone the details of the larger trunks and special patented hardware. So, be aware that the small toy trunks being listed on places like ebay as a "rare salesman's sample" probably are not, and are almost always an actual child's toy trunk.
