T111 - Unusual Embossed Metal Doll Trunk - SOLD 11/2018

Size: 11 1/2" wide, 9" tall, 8" deep.

Here's a very interesting and somewhat unique antique doll trunk with embossed metal covering, hardwood slats and zinc slat clamps. The embossed metal has the grapevine pattern and appears to be the original colors, with dark brown and a dark gold for the raised pattern. The trunk has not been repainted and has a wonderful patina and true antique look. Even the old leather handles are still intact. The brass lock is marked "Pat. July 8, 1884". There is no key for the lock. I expect this child's trunk was made sometime in the late 1880's or in the 1890's. That's when most of the embossed metal was first produced and used on these trunks. The silver colored zinc slat clamps provide a very nice contrast and more ornate look to this trunk. The trunk is very heavy and sturdy for it's size. The interior has the original fancy paper lining with Victorian style trim in the lid. This is all original and it doesn't look like this trunk ever had a tray. It has been carefully cleaned and the wood slats were refinished to show their beauty. A wonderful little trunk for display or use with dolls and other small collectibles. Some like to use these as jewelry boxes or desk trunks for cards and letters.

Quart size crock jar not included....just shown for size comparison.
