T129 - Small Goldsmith & Son Trunk, Brass Lock & Key - SOLD

Size: 20" wide, 9" tall, 17" front to back.

An unusual small trunk which has the maker's brass label with "Neverbreak Trunks, Manufactured by L. Goldsmith & Son, Newark, New Jersey". I believe it to be from about 1900 to the 1920's. It's in very good original condition, with vulcanized fiber covering, brass plated hardware, and a very nice solid brass lock with 2 original keys. The interior has a covered compartment on one side which has four smaller compartments inside. The other side is open for larger items and is 4 1/2 inches deep. The compartment lid and other inside pieces are all wood, with brass hinges and hooks. The front latches work well, and the brass lock is stamped "Excelsior Lock Works, Newark, NJ.". An interesting historical note about this lock: When the Excelsior Lock Works was first opened they were located in Stamford, CT, but they didn't want their competitors to know where they were located and who started the company in the 1890's, so they marked their first locks with Newark, NJ when in fact they were never located in Newark. Later locks are marked Stamford, CT. This is a very rare Excelsior lock because of the Newark, NJ marking. This small trunk could have been custom made for a traveling salesman to carry samples or for some other special use. There are some numbers marked inside the trunk on the lid, "25 / 12-18" but I don't know what they mean or if it is a date. Wonderful for display, storage of small keepsakes or your collectibles.
