T101 - Unique Jenny Lind Doll Trunk

$675.00

Size: 14" wide, 8" tall, 8 1/2" front to back.

This is a very rare and adorable little trunk from the 1870's. It's an authentic Jenny Lind style child's doll trunk complete with original lock and key, inner tray, and beautiful porcelain or milk glass buttons on brass rosettes. The keyhole or breadloaf shape of the trunk, as well as the distinctive decorative buttons, are the classic features of the Jenny Lind style. It has been very carefully refinished and restored using all the original parts and inner tray. We have added a miniature chromolithograph print of a lady in the lid (maybe it's Jenny Lind?). The miniature porcelain buttons are rarely found and this is only the second one we have seen in 30 years. The metal lock is complete and original and it has two patent dates on it from 1869. It is quite hard to find with the original key. The pine wood is in excellent condition with no major cracks or other damage and has a hand rubbed satin finish. This trunk was originally paper covered but the paper was nearly worn off and the refinished wood is too beautiful to recover. This beauty has been relined with fabric similar in color and style to the original paper lining. The wooden bottom of the trunk is very clean and in excellent condition with two small slats. Jenny Lind was the most famous singer of her time and she toured the U.S. from 1850 to 1852. It is said that she was the first to use a trunk with the "bread loaf" or "figure eight" shape which was given her name and they remained very popular until the early 1870's. The leather handles have been replaced just as original, with the same metal "rosettes" that came on the trunk. The old leather hinges were replaced with stronger iorn hinges to provide many years of use. I don't "plastic coat" trunks with polyurethane as some do, but rather use a hand rubbed wood finish and tung oil varnish which gives an antique patina look to the wood. As any experienced antique dealer or collector will know, these little doll trunks are very hard to find in any condition, and especially with the features that this one has. It would look wonderful displayed with your dolls or trunks, or would make a great jewelry or document box.
