T113 - Rare Alligator Bag, Circa 1900 - SOLD 07/2010

$369.00

Size: 15" wide, 9" tall, 7" front to back.

This is a rare circa 1890 - 1900 alligator hide bag or doctors style case. A great collectible display piece! It's in very good condition for it's age, with some expected signs of use and wear but no real damage or pieces missing. The handle is also alligator hide and in good shape. There are three solid brass latches on top that still work (no key) The side latches are very interesting and have small buttons to push in to open them. The interior of the bag has two side compartments, and is all lined with soft pigskin leather. There are a couple stain spots on the interior and exterior but don't really detract from the overall appearance. The bottom is in good shape with the four original brass feet. There are a couple old Customs tags which have the date 190_ printed on them, so this was used sometime between 1900 to 1909. I could not find a name or label on the bag but it has some numbers stamped in the alligator hide on the bottom. Some of the early trunk companies made these alligator bags and show them in their catalogs. A nice vintage alligator bag!
