T128 - 1860's Leather Trunk with Copper Studs SOLD 07/2010

$950.00

Size: 30" wide, 15 1/2" tall, 16 1/2" front to back

Here is a very rare find, a totally original and complete trunk from the 1850's to 1860's period. It is covered with hand tooled leather which was given a golden varnish coating, which was sometimes done by trunk makers of that time. There are fancy designs tooled into the leather and some of the dark gold varnish is still present. The narrow wood slats, handles, lock, and iron metalwork are attached with large copper studs all over the trunk. Brass lock plate, with working original key! The interior is complete with the tray and lid compartment, all covered with very interesting paper with beautiful designs. The maker's label, Crouch and Fitzpatrick or New York, is on the lid and there is a great colored engraving, ladies fashion print in the tray. This is old and an original, not a reprint. This trunk was made before the chromolithograph pictures came out in the 1870's, and trunk makers or the owner would sometimes put fashion priints in their trunks. This one is marked with "Engraved and Printed by Illman Brothers" in tiny print. These were popular in fashion publications by Godeys, Peterson's and other companies from the 1850's to 1870's. In fabulous condition for it's age, and nice enough to be a museum piece. It has only some minor age spots inside and one spot of missing paper. Folks, these trunks were used during the gold rush period and the Civil War period! This would look great at the foot of your bed or could be used as a coffee table. Crouch and Fitzpatrick was in business making trunks in New York from the 1830's!
