T106 - Jenny Lind, Stagecoach Trunk, Ca. 1860 - SOLD 03/2023
$849.00
Size: 24" Wide, 16" Tall, 16" front to back.
As featured in Country Living Magazine, a medium size Jenny Lind or Stagecoach trunk of the 1860's. Some also call these a Civil War period trunk and some of these were used during the war. They were first made by American trunk makers about 1850 based on historical documentation, and became known as Jenny Lind trunks by later 1850's after her American tour. This has the unique keyhole or figure eight shape which is very elegant. This one has five iron bands and two up each side, with the original large brass buttons and a fabulous original solid brass lock (no key). The lock is quite rare and it has a figure of George Washington holding a sword and a document. The interior of the trunk is covered in new fabric. The upper lid compartment is complete and the lift out tray is present. The side handles are replaced in the original style and will push flat until used. The trunk also has smaller brass buttons holding the valance (dust band) around the lid. This was a high quality trunk for its' time. The iron hinges are in good condition. The trunk is structurally very sound with a beautiful finish. A true piece of American history related to the Swedish singer Jenny Lind. These were made during and after her extremely popular U.S. tour in 1850 to 1852. Many items were named after her in the following years and she remained very popular until her death. The trunk is well made and strong and the bottom is in excellent condition too with wood slats and new glides.
