T120 - 1860's Brass Bound Beauty!

Stunning Civil War period trunk with original black canvas covering, oak slats, and five brass bands! We rarely get trunks of this age that are in nice enough condition to keep the original covering, but this one deserves to be preserved. Collectors now appreciate the rarity and beauty of early American trunks in original condition. Named for Jenny Lind, called the "Swedish Nightengale", a famous singer who toured the U.S. in the 1850's under the management of P.T. Barnum, these graceful trunks were made in the U.S. until about 1870. This is a "top of the line" model with five brass bands, large brass buttons, and a fancy brass lock plate. (Some folks have called these Saratoga trunks, but those came along later and Saratoga trunks are large round top trunks.) This trunk is very sturdy and has all the original brass banding and buttons. The oak slats were removed and carefully refinished and then replaced. The brass lock plate is very fancy but the inner lock is incomplete and doesn't work. The inner tray was remade using pine similar to the old style. Heavy, stitched replacement leather handles have been specially made for the trunk. The trunk interior has been relined with blue and beige fabric similar in pattern to the original lining (see close-up picture). These trunks were used by men and women and even Civil War officers. The fascinating old label has been preserved in the lid, made by Barnes and Johnson of Montpelier, VT, who also made carpet bags, valises, harnesses, whips, etc. The label even has a little drawing of a Jenny Lind Trunk, how great! This trunk is ready to store your treasures and can be used in many places around the home. Looks great at the foot of the bed!
