L117 - Antique 1879 Trunk Lock with Key - SOLD 02/2023

$62.00

An antique trunk lock with one original barrel key. The lock is in very good used working condition and it has the steel spring on the back which pushes the top hasp piece out when it's unlocked. It is marked on the top hasp piece "Pat'd April 15, 1879". The patent was awarded to John Haskell, a trunk maker in Chicago, but he later had the locks made by American lock manufacturers. This measures a total of 6" tall at the center and 5" wide when locked, measured edge to edge including the large backplate. This is a surface-style lock and does not require a hole in the trunk. Made of heavy stamped steel and cast iron with brass rivets. This was cleaned and painted in satin black. A very popular style lock and used by many trunk makers on all types of trunks from the 1880's to 1930's. The lock works well and can be installed with trunk nails, rivets, or bolts. Very few are found with the 1879 patent date and later versions were made by Eagle, Corbin, and Yale & Towne lock companies.
