Jenny Lind Stagecoach Trunk, Ca. 1860's - 1870's
This old trunk is another example of the beautifully designed Jenny Lind
trunks from the 1850's to 1870's period. Nobody knows exactly how long these
trunks were made but we do know they made popular by Jenny Lind, the Swedish
singer, during the 1850's when she toured the U.S. and Europe. I have not
seen any in the early trunk maker's catalogs from the late 1870's and later,
so I assume they were no longer in style then. This trunk is made of thick
beautiful pine with narrow oak slats, iron bands with brass buttons, and
iron trim. All of the parts, such as brass lock cover, brass buttons, iron
handle holders, bottom rollers, hinges, etc. are original and in excellent
condition. The lock still works and has the original key! The wood is
finished with a smooth hand rubbed satin gloss finish. There are a few small
age cracks but these have all been glued and the trunk is very strong and
solid. The bottom has the original iron rollers and wood slats and is in
super condition. The size is a nice 29" wide, 16" tall and 17" deep on the
sides. The rounded "figure 8" shape is fabulous and the main feature of the
Jenny Lind style. The interior and wooden tray is completely re-lined with
fabric and there is a period Victorian print in the lid. Some people call
these trunks "Saratoga" trunks, but my research shows that it is really a
Jenny Lind trunk and the Saratoga trunk (larger round top trunk) came into
use later in the 1870's. The handles have been replaced with thick stitched
leather handles. A very beautiful trunk which has so many uses, and is also
a collector's item.
Price: $795 plus $40 shipping by FedEx Ground.
