Burroughs Dome Top Trunk

Item #T110

Price

Burroughs Dome Top Trunk

Size: 34" wide, 25" tall, 18" deep

This old trunk was made by George Burroughs of Milwaukee around 1880 - 1890. It is a very strong, well made trunk, and in excellent condition complete with the original sectioned wooden tray. The original fancy metal label is on the front and that is unusual because most trunks do not have a label of this type (see detailed picture below). The thick wood is very beautiful and is finished with a smooth hand-rubbed satin tung oil finish. The handles have been replaced with original style stitched leather handles. The beautiful fancy brass lock (no key) is in great condition as well as the heavy iron catches and all of the original hardware. The interior is relined with heavy fabric of several earth-tone colors. The trunk makers did not use the term "dome top" trunk but many people today have called these by that name or camel back, hump back, steamer trunk, etc. In old trunk catalogs I have seen these called Round Top trunks or sometimes Saratoga trunks for the larger, more ornate versions. I have seen very few of the Burroughs trunks, but they were certainly very skilled at trunk making. This trunk would look great at the foot of a bed or in a special location to show off it's beauty.
