Extraordinary Brass Bound Jenny Lind Trunk, Ca. 1850's
Here is one of the most beautiful, large brass bound Jenny
Lind trunks we have ever had. It dates from the 1850's to 1860's when Jenny
Lind was so popular that a number of items were named after her, including a
town in California. The large brass banded "figure eight" style such as this
type are very hard to find. This trunk measures 32" wide by 19" tall by 20"
deep at the widest point. It has an wonderful shape and five brass bands
attached with large brass "buttons". The brass has been cleaned and all of
the brass buttons are original, no repro replacements. Jenny Lind trunks
were named after the Swedish singer who toured the U.S. in the early 1850's
with P.T. Barnum. Known as the "Swedish Nightingale" she is said to have had
a trunk like this one with her and they became all the rage for several
years. The leather handles and straps have been replaced with new heavy
leather and the straps can be buckled closed. The fancy brass lock plate has
a keyhole cover that moves, and the original lock still works well. An old
key is included which works with the lock. The bottom is thick solid wood
covered with painted metal and is in excellent, clean condition. The two
wood slats on the base of the trunk were replaced with thick wood slats like
the originals due to some deterioration. The trunk is made of dark pine with
a very smooth hand rubbed finish. There are a couple cracks as with most
trunks, but nothing that really detracts from it's beauty. The interior is
all fabric lined with an old fashioned floral print and there is an
interesting Victorian style picture in the lid. The lift out wooden tray
with fabric covering makes the trunk even more useful. This is a very sturdy
trunk, quite attractive, interesting, and ready to use anywhere in your
home. This is a true collector's item and conversation piece. Some have
called this style a "Saratoga" trunk, but my research shows that the
Saratoga trunk came along later based on large round top trunks used at the
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. resort town. This trunk is definitely a pre-Civil War
or Civil War period item. The purchaser will receive a surprise bonus item
related to the history of this trunk! Please let us know if you have any
questions or want more pictures. |
