Rare & Genuine Excelsior Oak Slat Trunk Circa: 1880 Measurements: 34" wide, 24 1/4" tall, 21" front to back. Slightly rounded top. This old trunk is a fine example of the rare and beautiful oak slat trunks first patented by the Excelsior Company. This one has the stamped imprint on the front which proves it to be one of the original Excelsior trunks. It is stamped into the oak under the lock, "Patented Excelsior Jan. 7, 1868." The oak slat trunks are extremely strong and durable and heavier than most other trunks of their size. This has all the original heavy iron hardware and solid brass lock with original key! The lock is marked "Pat'd Dec. 7, 1880" and in very small print, "Eagle Lock Co. Terryville, CT." Eagle made locks for many trunk companies but did not make trunks. It is common for trunks to have several patent dates on hardware, and these trunks were probably made from the late 1860's until the mid 1880's. The catches work well, it has all four iron rollers on the base, and four strong hinges (most trunks had two, and some three). The handles have been replaced with original style heavy, stitched leather handles. A lot of time was spent carefully cleaning and finishing the wood and metal in a way to preserve all the parts of the trunk and the wonderful antique patina of the oak. There is really beautiful grain in the oak slats, which you can see to some extent in the pictures. The interior tray is solid pine, reconstructed like the original style with rounded sides and two sections. The interior has been lined with quality fabric with an antique style print. A Victorian print of the 1880 period has been put in the lid, as many of the high quality trunks had when made. (see detailed pictures for a close up of details) The look of this trunk is quite impressive and the condition is excellent. In my opinion, these trunks are the most difficult to find (you could say scarce or rare compared to other styles). They are constructed with a "body" of thick pine and then oak slats were nailed in rows over that base. Then the heavier outer slats were put on to complete the trunk. Shipping: While this trunk can be shipped FedEx Ground or Greyhound Express, we would recommend that it be picked up in Nashville or we can arrange delivery within a reasonable range from Nashville.
