This old trunk is a fine example of the "half trunk" style, which basically
is a recent term used for the smaller trunks that are about half the size of
the more common "standard" sizes. This size is much harder to find than the
larger trunks. Some trunk makers called these hat trunks. This one is of
very high quality, was originally leather covered and built extra strong. It
is made from thick pine with hardwood slats, probably oak, with iron
hardware and sheet metal. All hardware pieces are original including the
brass lock (complete but not working), front catches, hinges, handle
holders, bottom rollers, and trim. Handles are new stitched leather
replacements. The interior is exceptional with the original lithograph print
in the lid and the original Victorian decorative paper trim. A cedar tray
has been made, which gives this trunk interior a pleasant cedar fragrance.
It has new fabric lining which coordinates with the original picture and
trim. The original lid picture and the picture in the tray both depict
rowing contests and steamships, from the 1880's period. The finish is a very
hard, durable, and smooth hand-rubbed satin finish, not polyurethane. A
beautiful and unique trunk that can be used in many places in the home.
