Early Child Size Trunk, Ca. 1870's
This old trunk is very possibly a child's trunk but it could have been a
small trunk used for short trips by adults too. It is made of thick dark
pine with narrow oak slats, iron metalwork, and pressed tin decorations and
handle holders. It measures 24" wide, 11" tall and 12" deep (front to back).
The leather handles are replaced and the fancy pressed metal handle holders
(star pattern) are original. The lock, hinges, "rosette" decorations, etc.
are all original and in excellent condition. There are a few very small
imperfections in the wood, but not unusual for a trunk of this age. The wood
is very smooth and finished with a hand-rubbed satin tung oil finish. This
finish is very durable and water resistant and has a nice antique patina. I
never use polyurethane and think it looks too "plastic" and is not suitable
for real antiques. The interior and lift out wood tray are covered with an
old style floral fabric and a Victorian style print of children and a horse
is in the lid. You can see the detail and color of the fabric and print in
the pictures. A very cute little trunk that can be used in many ways. Please
