1850's Flat Top Washburn Gold Rush Trunk
This early trunk is handmade and probably from the late 1840's to 1850's and is called a "gold rush" trunk because that is when they started using the large brass "gold nuggets" as decoration. The trunk has dovetailed construction which is seen on the sides. This is very rare in this type of trunk. The height with new rollers is 15 1/2", (without rollers 14 1/2" tall), width about 28", depth 15". The rollers can be easily removed and small glides can be put on, or wooden feet can be added if you want this trunk a little taller. The original hardware includes a fancy brass and iron lock (no key), iron banding, and large brass "buttons". The brass hinges have been replaced as the originals wore out. The dyed leather handles are replaced and very strong. The inside has been relined with fabric which has small early style ships on a beige background. The original label is still there and has
"George Washburn, Saddle, Harness, Trunk & Military Accoutrement Maker, Springfield,
VT". The trunk is in excellent condition but there are normal small signs of age on the trunk and the top wood had a thin crack that was repaired. This trunk could be used as a coffee table or would look wonderful in many places around the home.
