French Steamer Trunk, Aux Etats Unis, Ca. 1900 This wonderful old trunk is from Paris, France and was made by a company called Aux Etats Unis around 1890 to 1910. The original maker's label is inside the lid. These early French trunks are quite popular with decorators and collectors and this one is in very good condition, complete with the inner webbed ˇ§cageˇ¨ that lifts out (this was the French style of a tray for their trunks, which made it easy to lift out all the contents at once.) The company was one of a few that made trunks similar in style to the more well known Louis Vuitton and Goyard trunks. This has the same style solid brass handles, lock, catches, and hardware, as well as the leather trim and decorated canvas covering from the 1890ˇ¦s to 1920ˇ¦s period. It is such as great size, measuring 28" wide by 20" high and 20" front to back and is perfect for use as an end table, lamp table, etc. It has the normal signs of wear expected on a trunk that was shipped overseas, but no major flaws or real damage. There are a couple small patches to the old canvas covering, which are not very noticeable. The interior has the original fabric and silk lining with some wear and staining, but is clean and without odors. There is a very subtle design in the canvas covering, and the nice wooden slats with brass nails which really add to the attractive look of this trunk. It was the normal practice in France to have your trunks marked with colors of your choice and your initials painted on the side, and this one has a large "S" on each end. You can have the same look as the very expensive Louis Vuitton trunks, but at a much lower price. I think these less known French trunks are the real ˇ§sleepersˇ¨ in the trunk market today, which will continue to increase in value. This same size and style trunk made by Louis Vuitton recently sold at auction for over $10,000. It's a very interesting and attractive looking vintage French trunk. Price: $985 plus $60 shipping by FedEx Ground in the continental U.S. Will ship to other areas, so please email for rate. |
